Let's Learn Korean - Prohibition and Obligation Particle ((으)면 안 되다, 안 ~(으)면 안 되다/~지 않으면 안되다, ~어/아야 되다/~어/아야 하다) -

A.  Prohibition Particle

Prohibition particle is ~(으)면 안 되다. This particle is combination of ~(으)면 which means if  (read this to know more about this particle), 안 which means no and 되다 which means be or become. So this particle can be translated into "You are not allowed to..." or "You shouldn't....". This particle is used to warn or prohibit someone and deny permission.

Example:  -  그 사람이 말할 때 웃으면 안 돼요  =  You are not allowed to laugh when that person is talking/You shouldn't laugh when that person is talking
                   -  부모님께 소리지르면 안 돼요  =  You are not allowed to yell at your parents/You shouldn't yell at your parents
                   -  구두가 너무 비싸면 안 돼요  =  You are not allowed to buy expensive shoes/You shouldn't buy expensive shoes
                   -  그 여자를 결혼하면 안 돼요  =  You are not allowed to marry her/You shouldn't marry her

The positive form of this particle can be made just by omitting the 안.  And the meaning of this particle is "It will be succeeded if..." or "You should..."

Example:  -  동방신기를 만나고 싶으면 한국에 가면 돼요  =  You should go to South Korea if you want to meet TVXQ!
                   -  열심히 공부하면 돼요  =  You will be succeeded if you study hard
                   -  그 남자를 결혼하면 부자면 돼요  =  You will be rich if you marry him

well well.. the last example.. don't do that... don't be such person kkkkk

                 -  그 여자를 안 결혼하면 안 돼요 / 그 여자를 결혼하지 않으면 안 돼요 =  I must marry her

B.2 ~어/아야 되다/~어/아야 하다

 내야 하는데..

이젠 잊어야 하는데 기억속에 지워야 하는데..

The difference between this particle and the previous particle is this particle means 'ought' or 'should' (just in case you don't know the difference between must, ought and should, read this)
어/아야 하다 is formal particle, while 어/아야 되다 is informal particle.
