Let's Learn Korean - Auxiliaries part 2 (~어/아 주다, 어/아 드리다, 어/아 주세요, ...) -


1. Particle ~어/아 주다

 



거짓말이라도 괜찮아 날 기다려준다고 단 한마디만 해 줘..


The meaning of this particle is "do something for ....".

 Example:  -  내가 맛있는 음식을 사 줄게요  =   I will buy delicious food for you
                   -  창민이 한국어를 가르쳐 줘요  =  Changmin is helping someone by teaching Korean
                    -  제니가 선물을 보내 줬어요  =  Jenny sent (someone) the gift for me
                   

Now pay attention to the examples of the difference between the sentence that's not being paired with this particle and that's being paired.

Example:  -  제가 파티에 왔어요  =  I went to the party
                   -  제가 파티에 와 줬어요  =   I went to the party for someone


 We can also add  위해서 to state the recipient more explicitly.

Example:  -  좋은 사람을 위해서 맛있는 점심을 만들어 줬어요  =  She made the delicious lunch for her beloved one
                   -  나를 위해서 병원에 와 주셨어요  =  They came to the hospital for me

2.  Particle ~어/아 드리다

This particle is the formal form of the previous particle. So, it's being used when the recipients are honourable or older people.

Example:  -  아버지께 새 차를 사 드렸어요  =  I bought a new car for my father
                  -   사장님께 문을 열어 드렸어요  =  I opened the door for the President



3. Particle 어/아 주세요

The meaning of this particle is "please do something for me/someone". So, this particle is used to ask someone to do something politely.

Example:  -  잠깐 기다려 주세요  =  Please wait for me awhile
                   -  나를 스페인어를 가르쳐 주세요  =  Please teach me Spanish
                  -  TV를 꺼 주세요  =  Please turn off the TV for me

-  What's the difference between this particle and ~세요? =
The level of politeness. Both have the same meaning and usefulness, but using ~어/아 주세요 is more polite.

Example:  -  잡깐 기다려요               (formal)
                   -  잠깐 기다리세요          (formal and polite)
                   -  잠깐 기다 주세요    (formal and very polite)


3.  Particle ~어(아,여) 드릴까요 and ~어(아, 여) 주십시오

The meaning of ~어(아,여) 드릴까요 is "May I do .... for you?", while ~어(아, 여) 주십시오 is "Please do... for me".

Example:  -  스페인어를 가르쳐 드릴까요?  =  May I teach you Spanish?
                  -  네, 가르쳐 주십시오  =  Yes, please teach me
                  - 구두를 착용해 드릴까요?  =  May I put the shoes on you?
                  -  네, 착용해 주십시요 =  Yes, please put it for me



4.  Particle ~어(아,여) 주시겠습니까 and ~아(어,여) 드리겠습니다


The meaning of ~어(아,여) 주시겠습니까 is "Will you do .... for me?", while ~아(어,여) 드리겠습니다 is "I will do ... for you". These forms are more formal than the previous particles.

Example:  -  스페인어를 가르쳐 주시겠습니까?  =  Will you teach me Spanish?
                  -  예, 가르쳐 드리겠습니다  =  Yes, I will do that for you
                  -  구두를 착용해 주시겠습니까?  =  Will you put the shoes on me?
                  -   예. 착용해 드리겠습니다  =  Yes, I will put it for you
