Let's Learn Korean - Particle 군요 -

군요 (formal) or 구나 (informal) is used for root words of adjective, linking verb and verb. Do you know what root word means? if you see the words on the dictionary, you would see '가다' or '보다' etc. nah, 가 and 보 are the root words. The useful of this particle is to declare the awareness of the speaker about what she/he just feels/realises.

  • Adjective
Example:  -  그 여자가 너무 예뻐군요  =  Oh, that girl is so beautiful

  • Linking Verb
Example:  -  케티가 미국 사람이에요  =  Cathy is an American
                             -  케티가 미국 사람이군요  =  Oh, Cathy is an American

Just like the previous example, if you see the meaning is always any 'Oh', it's because i think 'Oh' and 'Wah' are the exact words to express anything that we just realise/remember. So, what's linking verb? Linking verb is copula+에요 or +예요. The first example is the normal statement, which just uses linking verb. The speaker knew about Cathy's nationality since a long time ago. While the second example is the statement which uses this particle since the speaker is just found out that Cathy is an American.

  • Verb
Example:  -  영어를 가르치는군요  =  Oh, she teaches English..

Especially for verb root, the additional particle is 는군요.

  •  For the awareness about the past

Example:  -  영국의 수도가 런던이었군요  =  Oh, i just know that London is the capital city of England

London is the capital city of England since a long time ago, but the speaker  is just found out about it.

  •  For the awareness about possibility that will happen in the future

Example:  -  내일 동방신기를 보겠군요  =  Oh, i think tomorrow she will watch TVXQ.

야! 여기서구나!
